Starting 2019 strong, Eastside Memorial Early College High School’s, Eastside Theatre Club, took to Dallas for the statewide August Wilson Monologue Contest. Saturday, January 12th, EMECHS’s Theatre Instructors, Stephanie Seuser and Conrado Gonzales, gathered three passionate theatre students and visited Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas to compete with over 140 Texas high school students. Each student was required to present a two- to three minute monologue from August Wilson’s “Century Cycle”, a collection of 10 plays that embody the 20th century African American experience. In attendance was senior, Anastasia Zuniga and sophomores, Devothe Mutoni and Enrique Rodriguez, and though they didn’t continue on to finals, they had a blast being involved. Giving excellent performances and shining bright, they enjoyed the rich experience of observing other contestants and being around similar interest peers. As EMECHS’s theatre program continues to grow, students are given the opportunity to discover more about themselves and passions.
